Sports therapy is the therapeutic application of a variety of massage techniques together with passive and active stretches, involving the manipulation of the body’s soft tissues, primarily the muscles, but also the tendons and ligaments. Every horse has approximately 700 individual muscles in a range of muscle groups, that make up around 60% of its body weight. Each of these muscle groups are designed to work in harmony with each other, facilitating efficient movement. Efficient movement leaves the horse more comfortable and more able. To achieve this all of the body’s muscles need to be able to work equally and in harmony with each other. If one or more of the body’s muscles cannot work to its full potential the surrounding muscles must compensate. If left uncorrected, this can result in strain and damage to the surrounding structures, which can result in the whole horse becoming affected.
